Meta has announced the upcoming launch of a video editing app called Edits, targeting creators who make content directly on their phones. The announcement comes shortly after ByteDance’s popular video editing app, CapCut, was removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the wake of the TikTok ban.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, shared the news on Threads, revealing that the app will be available on iOS next month, with an Android version to follow. “There’s a lot happening right now, but no matter what, it’s our responsibility to provide creators with the best tools to bring their ideas to life,” Mosseri wrote.
Features Designed for Creators
Edits is designed specifically for video creators, offering a range of features to streamline and enhance the creative process. The app will include:
- A dedicated inspiration tab for discovering trends and creative ideas.
- An idea tracker to organize content concepts.
- A high-quality camera to capture professional-grade footage.
- Collaboration tools, enabling creators to share drafts with friends or team members for feedback.
Additionally, creators will be able to track how their Edits-made videos perform on Instagram through integrated insights.
“This app is built for creators rather than casual video makers,” Mosseri noted, highlighting its focus on advanced tools for professional content creation.
Meta’s Market Strategy
Meta has a history of seizing market opportunities to fill gaps left by competitors. When TikTok was banned in India in 2020, Meta quickly introduced Instagram Reels, catering to short-video creators. Similarly, the launch of Threads in 2023 aimed to rival text-based platforms like X.
The launch of Edits appears to be a strategic move to attract video creators who are looking for alternatives following CapCut’s removal. Even if CapCut is restored, the uncertainty surrounding its availability could push creators toward new platforms like Edits.
Competitive Landscape
Meta’s move also comes at a time when other video editing apps, such as the a16z-backed Captions, are intensifying competition by introducing freemium models to expand their user bases. With Edits, Meta aims to solidify its position as a go-to provider of tools for creators navigating the shifting landscape of digital video production.
As the app launches next month, Meta is working closely with select creators to refine the user experience, signaling its commitment to supporting the creator community amidst rapid changes in the digital content ecosystem.
