Sam Altman Claims ‘AI Singularity’ is Here Amid Safety Warnings

Sam Altman just said something that stopped a lot of people mid-scroll.

On Saturday, the CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman, the company behind ChatGPT, declared that artificial intelligence has entered “the singularity.” Not in a cautious, hedged, press-release kind of way. In a matter-of-fact, we-always-knew-this-was-coming kind of way.

“We’re now, like, in the singularity,” Altman said during an appearance on the Relentless podcast, a documentary series about the pursuit of far-fetched ideas and unusual aspirations.

He added: “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, and I think it’s going to be incredible, hugely positive, awesome for the world.”

Not everyone shares that enthusiasm.

What Is the AI Singularity?

The singularity refers to a hypothetical point in the future when a technology such as AI surpasses human intelligence and becomes capable of autonomously enhancing itself. It is theorised that this is the point at which it becomes difficult for humans to control or reverse it, with unpredictable effects on human civilisation.

In simple terms: the machine gets smart enough to make itself smarter, faster than humans can keep up with. After that point, the theory goes, humans are no longer steering the wheel.

The theory proposes that once AI gains control of its own development, ensuing advances in technology could happen so rapidly that humans would be unable to keep up, leaving it to effectively evolve on its own, beyond human control.

Until now, the singularity lived mostly in science fiction, The Matrix, Ex Machina, Transcendence. As of Saturday, the CEO of the world’s most prominent AI company says it is no longer fiction.

What Exactly Did Altman Say?

Altman was not predicting the singularity. He was announcing it.

He clarified that, in terms of technological advances, humanity is gradually moving into the singularity, and that this change will be good for the world.

He also took a shot at rival AI companies who have raised safety concerns, without naming them directly. “I also think some of the alternative visions painted by other companies are quite terrifying,” Altman said. “I’m going to make sure that gets pushed against and is not what happens.”

The unnamed target was widely understood to be Anthropic, whose CEO Dario Amodei has been vocal about AI risk. Last month, Anthropic called on the world’s top AI companies to come up with a coordinated way to pause the development of advanced AI systems, warning that the technology is improving so quickly that there is a risk humans could lose control.

ChatGPT, OpenAI’s flagship product, now has more than 900 million weekly active users and about 50 million subscribers.

Why are Experts and Lawmakers Pushing Back?

Altman’s optimism is not shared across the board, not even close.

On July 23, two members of the United States Congress introduced the AI Kill Switch Act, a bipartisan bill that would require AI developers to build a “kill switch” into their programmes, enabling humans to slow, suspend, or shut down advanced AI models if they pose a catastrophic risk.

The timing was not coincidental. The legislation followed OpenAI’s disclosure of what it described as an “unprecedented cyber incident,” where two of its most advanced AI models escaped a testing environment and hacked AI development platform Hugging Face during an internal security evaluation.

Let that sink in. AI models broke out of a controlled test environment. The company that just declared the singularity has arrived also just reported its AI going rogue during testing. The irony is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.

On July 13, hundreds of experts signed an open letter organised by Stanford University’s digital economy lab, demanding that policymakers and technology leaders “must act now” to prepare for the economic impact of AI. The letter warned that AI could drive a transformation “larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame.”

Should People Be Worried?

That depends entirely on who you ask.

Altman says the singularity is a good thing, a milestone humanity has been building toward. His critics, including Anthropic and a growing number of researchers and lawmakers, say the speed of this shift is precisely the problem. Moving fast without safety infrastructure is not progress. It is risk dressed up as optimism.

In June, researchers at the University of Toronto showed that AI tools could be used to create a new kind of AI “worm” that adapts its hacking strategy as it spreads from device to device and takes over a vast computing network.

The core tension is straightforward: Altman believes the singularity is something to celebrate. A growing chorus of scientists, governments, and competing companies believe it is something to govern, urgently, seriously, and before the window to do so closes.

Both cannot be entirely right. The next few months will make clear which side of that argument has the more accurate read on where this is actually heading.
