Guinness World Records has officially recognized Rayyanah Barnawi as the first female Arab astronaut, following her groundbreaking spaceflight as part of the Axiom Mission 2. The mission launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on May 21, 2023, marking a significant milestone for women in the Arab world and the broader scientific community.

Barnawi, alongside fellow Saudi astronaut Ali Al-Qarni, traveled to the International Space Station (ISS), where they spent eight days conducting a series of pioneering research projects.

During their time aboard the ISS, Barnawi and Al-Qarni completed 14 research projects focused on the effects of microgravity. Notably, three of these projects involved kite experiments that engaged 12,000 school students from 47 locations across Saudi Arabia, fostering interest in science and technology among the youth through satellite communication.

As part of the Saudi Astronaut Program, Barnawi’s mission included groundbreaking experiments aimed at understanding immune cell responses and the biological processes affected by microgravity. Her research background is extensive; she has dedicated her career to advancing scientific knowledge in cancer stem cells. Barnawi holds a bachelor’s degree in genetic engineering and tissue development from the University of Otago in New Zealand and a master’s degree in biomedical sciences from Alfaisal University in Riyadh.

Barnawi’s achievements reflect her deep connections to both her Saudi roots and her Sudanese heritage, highlighting her as a role model for aspiring scientists and astronauts across the region.

Her record-breaking achievement continues a legacy in space exploration established by Prince Sultan bin Salman, who became the first Arab in space in 1985. Barnawi’s journey underscores the growing representation of Arab women in STEM fields and serves as an inspiration for future generations aiming to break barriers in science and technology.
