Ilya Sutskever, co-founder of OpenAI who departed the organization earlier this year, has successfully raised $1 billion for his new artificial intelligence company, Safe Superintelligence (SSI).
Sutskever, who served as OpenAI’s chief scientist and co-led its Superalignment team, is now focusing on SSI’s mission of developing “safe superintelligence.” His new venture aims to concentrate on a singular goal and product, with a strong emphasis on safety and security without the distraction of management overhead or short-term commercial pressures.
SSI, co-founded by Sutskever, Daniel Gross—formerly overseeing Apple’s AI and search initiatives—and ex-OpenAI employee Daniel Levy, operates offices in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv, Israel. The company’s commitment to safety and progress is highlighted as a core aspect of its business model.
During this tumultuous period, Sutskever publicly expressed regret for his involvement, emphasizing his intention to reconcile with OpenAI and his continued admiration for the organization’s achievements. Now, with SSI, Sutskever aims to push forward his vision of AI safety and superintelligence with renewed focus and substantial backing.
